Off-grid Generation Powering Utility Operations
Nicor Gas, a division of Southern Company, operates its Troy Grove gas compression station in Illinois (a few hours from Chicago), responsible for storing 150 billion cubic feet of gas to supply the state during winter.
Nicor Gas needed to replace their aging, unreliable, and high-maintenance reciprocating engines, which were providing the necessary 1.2MW of off-grid onsite generation for the facility. They specifically sought a standalone solution that wouldn’t require constant operators, time-intensive monthly maintenance, or significant site downtime.
Vergent implemented a microturbine-based onsite generation solution at the Troy Grove site, composed of two C600S Capstone microturbines and one Vergent controller.
This new system provided reliable 24/7 power without the need for constant on-site operators or the high maintenance demands and downtime associated with the previous engines. It delivered the essential 1.2MW of power to support critical gas storage operations, ensuring consistent supply throughout Illinois’ winter months.
