Co-Digestion Biogas CHP Drives $40K in Annual Savings

At a Glance
• System Configuration: 2 × C30 Grid Connect Capstone Microturbines with gas conditioning
• Annual Generation: >400,000 kWh/year
• Energy Savings: ~$100,000 / year in reduced utility power and heating costs
• Thermal Integration: 860,000 BTU/hr of recovered hot water for anaerobic digester climate control

The Challenge
The Delhi Township Wastewater Treatment Plant—serving over 27,000 residents with an average design capacity of 4.5 million gallons per day—faced high continuous electrical and thermal demand to run its multi-stage treatment process. Municipal leaders sought a sustainable method to handle organic waste, reduce reliance on grid electricity, and heat their anaerobic digester tanks without relying on expensive, fossil-fueled boilers.

The Solution
Veristar Energy maintains the township's 60 kW biogas-powered Combined Heat & Power (CHP) system, featuring two C30 microturbines integrated into the facility's specialized anaerobic digestion system.
• Organics & Food Waste Co-Digestion: Captures methane produced by processing raw sewage sludge alongside diverted organic food waste from local schools, food banks, and nursing homes.
• Onsite Baseload Generation: Converts cleaned digester gas into over 500 MWh of continuous electricity annually, fed directly behind the meter to power municipal wastewater operations.
• Closed-Loop Digester Heating: Recovers 300,000 BTU/hr of high-grade exhaust thermal energy as hot water to maintain optimal operational temperatures within the Class A anaerobic digesters.
• Biogas Fuel Conditioning: Integrates Unison Solutions gas treatment technology to clean and compress raw, moisture-heavy biogas for reliable, low-emission microturbine combustion.

The Results
• $100,000 Annual Utility Savings: Significantly cuts plant electricity and heating costs, returning value directly to local taxpayers.
• Circular Community Waste Model: Transforms community food waste into a local energy asset, preventing landfill disposal while generating clean power.
• Lower Carbon Footprint: Captures waste methane that would otherwise be flared, turning greenhouse gases into clean energy and high-quality land-applied fertilizer.
• High-Reliability Operation: Delivers low-vibration, low-maintenance energy generation tailored for continuous municipal wastewater processing.
